SIZE

The USA has a population of over 300 million people. There are over 4,000 public and private colleges, universities, and community colleges which enrol almost 15 million students, and more than 600,000 of these are international students. These vast numbers mean that the opportunities to study in the USA are many and diverse, so whatever your interests or preferences, there is a college or university to match.

The USA also has the advantage of physical size. It is the third largest country in the world, and this means that in terms of geographical location or climate, there is also something to suit everyone. You might like the idea of spending a few years studying near the beach, or you may prefer to be in the mountains or perhaps even the desert! You might want to be in a large city, or you may rather be in a smaller town. Location can add a whole different dimension to your time at university, and you should think carefully about where you would like to be.

STYLE AND RANGE OF EDUCATION

There are a number of different styles of higher education in the US – they are not all large, state-run universities with thousands of students. This might appeal to some students, but others may prefer a smaller, private liberal arts college with just a few hundred students, and which offers a more personal undergraduate experience. You can also decide between a 2 or 4 year program, depending on the type of course you want to pursue. 

There is a vast range of subjects on offer, from the usual academic subjects, to the more vocational. You could study History or Wilderness Leadership, Biology or International Business and Theological Studies, for example.

SPORT

Athletics is also a key element at American universities, so if you are a talented athlete then there are many more scholarships available for which you can apply – doing something you enjoy can actually help pay your way through university!
